Why We Include the Bougainville Flag
At Nesian Kulture, we do not measure Pacific people only through politics or borders.
We recognise people through identity.
Through culture.
Through ancestry.
Through family and connection.
More than borders
Bougainville is currently an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea.
Its political future has remained part of an ongoing process following the 2019 independence referendum.
That reality matters.
But identity has never been shaped only through political status or national borders.
Across the Pacific, people carry identity through:
- ancestry
- language
- land
- culture
- family
- community
- shared history
And Bougainville carries a distinct cultural identity that many people strongly connect to and continue carrying with honour.
Its flag became one symbol of that identity and connection for many Bougainville people.
What people outside the Pacific sometimes miss
Across Oceania, many island communities carry histories shaped by colonial borders, migration, conflict, and political change.
Because of this, identity in the Pacific is often more layered than outsiders realise.
People may belong politically to one nation while also carrying a deeply distinct cultural identity connected to their own island, language, ancestry, and history.
That is part of why representation matters so deeply across Pacific communities.
Not because every political perspective is the same.
But because people want their identity and history to be recognised respectfully.
What NK stands for
Nesian Kulture was never built to divide Pacific people into categories.
It was built to honour the connections many island communities continue carrying across the ocean.
Across Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia, Pacific people often remain connected through:
- family
- faith
- resilience
- culture
- migration
- shared experiences
- respect for ancestry and elders
That connection matters.
Especially for Pacific people living away from the islands, trying to hold onto identity across generations.
Why we include the Bougainville flag
When we include the Bougainville flag, it is not intended as a political statement.
It is a statement of recognition and respect.
A way of saying:
We see you.
We respect your identity.
Your people matter.
Your history matters.
Your connection to the Pacific matters.
Because for many Bougainville people, the flag represents far more than politics alone.
It can represent:
- home
- ancestry
- resilience
- community
- cultural identity
- connection to their people
To our Bougainville family
If you are Bougainvillean, or connected to Bougainville through family and ancestry, we want you to know this:
You should never feel invisible within Pacific representation.
Your identity deserves respect.
And to Pacific people across Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and the diaspora:
Our histories may differ.
But respect can still exist across all of them.
That is what NK stands for.
