What is Cultural Appropriation
Cultural appropriation occurs when elements of a culture, such as symbols, art, or traditions, are used without permission or understanding, often leading to misrepresentation and disrespect. It involves adopting aspects of a culture for profit or fashion without honoring their origins or acknowledging the people behind them.
At Nesian Kulture, we are committed to avoiding cultural appropriation. Our approach is rooted in genuine appreciation and respect. We started with a deep connection to Tongan heritage, as I, Susan, am Tongan. Initially focusing on my own roots, we received an overwhelming response and support from the Samoan, Cook Islands, Fijian, Kiribati, and many other Pasifika communities. This outpouring of love and connection made it clear that we couldn't turn our backs on our Pasifika family.
Therefore, we collaborate with and support talented artists from all Pacific Island communities. Each piece in our collection is created with their permission and support, ensuring that we honor the true meanings behind their art. We provide fair compensation and proper credit to the creators, embracing the rich diversity of our cultures.
When you support Nesian Kulture, you’re backing a platform that values cultural respect and unity, not appropriation. Our mission is to celebrate the beauty of Pacific Island cultures authentically and with heartfelt commitment.
Why Embrace Aboriginal Heritage?
Celebrating Unity in Diversity
We understand you may be curious about why we include Aboriginal people alongside Pacific Islanders in our brand. It's a question we hear often, and we’re more than happy to share our story.
At Nesian Kulture, we celebrate diversity in all its forms. While Aboriginal people aren’t traditionally seen as part of the Pacific Islands, we've been welcomed with open arms by the Aboriginal community. They’ve expressed a desire to be part of our journey, and to us, that’s an invitation to come together as one big family.
We believe that embracing different backgrounds only makes us stronger and enriches our story. It’s about recognizing who we are and celebrating the beauty of unity in diversity.
Honouring Personal Stories
At Nesian Kulture, we hold personal connections close to our hearts. One of our proudest moments was naming a gym bag "Malia" after a beloved community member who beautifully represents both Tongan and Aboriginal heritage. This gesture reflects the deep bonds we share and the unique stories that shape our collective identity.
We care deeply about cultural respect, inclusivity, and making a meaningful impact through art. Every product we create tells a story—one that honours the people and cultures who inspire us.
Join us in celebrating diversity, embracing cultural fusion, and honouring the stories that make us who we are at Nesian Kulture.
