Why We Still Say Polynesian, Micronesian & Melanesian
“These names may not have started with us.
But they will be carried with honour by us.”
Nesian Kulture
Let’s Talk About It
Some people say we should not use the names Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian.
We hear that.
Those names came through history.
Some of that history was painful.
Some of it was not chosen by us.
But here is the truth.
Today, many of our people still use these names to feel seen.
To find each other.
To explain where they come from.
To stand together across many islands.
That matters.
That Was Then. This Is Now.
These names may have started as labels.
But our people have given them new meaning.
Polynesian.
Micronesian.
Melanesian.
They are not perfect words.
But they carry real people.
They carry families.
They carry islands.
They carry stories.
They carry identity.
We Are Not Here To Erase
At Nesian Kulture, we are not here to erase history.
We are here to carry identity with honour.
We say Polynesian, Micronesian and Melanesian because many of our people still connect through those names.
Not to divide us.
Not to limit us.
Not to replace our island names.
But to recognise the wider Pacific family we belong to.
One Family. Many Islands.
Every island has its own name.
Every people has its own story.
Every culture deserves respect.
Tongan.
Samoan.
Fijian.
Cook Islander.
Niuean.
Tokelauan.
Kiribati.
Marshallese.
Palauan.
Chuukese.
Solomon Islander.
Papua New Guinean.
Vanuatu.
Kanaky.
And many more.
We honour the island first.
The wider names help bring us together.
Why This Matters To NK
Nesian Kulture was built for representation.
Not trend.
Not hype.
Not empty fashion.
We create pieces that help our people feel seen in everyday life.
At home.
In the community.
At family gatherings.
Across Australia.
Across New Zealand.
Across the Pacific.
Across the world.
Because identity should not disappear just because we live away from the islands.
It should still be carried.
Carry It Properly
When we use these names, we use them with respect.
Polynesian.
Micronesian.
Melanesian.
Not as decoration.
As identity.
As belonging.
As honour.
This is why NK exists.
To create pieces that represent our people with weight, unity and respect.
One Family. Many Islands.
